Timber that’s built to last

Since 1945 we’ve seen what makes a fence fail early, and it’s nearly always the posts. That’s why the posts we put in the ground are chosen to last.

Posts that don’t give up

  • Kiln dried before treatment, so the preservative goes in deeper.
  • Fully incised. Small cuts let the treatment soak past the surface, right where rot starts.
  • Treated to highway specification for contact with the ground.
  • At least 10 years life expectancy.

All our other timber, the rails, boards and panels, is standard treated, with the same life expectancy.

Good timber only lasts if it’s put in properly: posts set deep in concrete, timber kept off the soil with gravel boards, and the right fence for how exposed the spot is. Read our advice on storm-proofing a fence and choosing closeboard or panels.

Timber questions

How long will a new fence last?

Our timber posts are kiln dried, fully incised and treated to highway specification for use in contact with the ground, with a life expectancy of at least 10 years. All our other timber is standard treated, with the same life expectancy.

What does “incised” mean?

Small cuts are made along the surface of the post before it is treated. They let the preservative soak deeper into the wood, especially at ground level, which is where posts usually rot first.

Do concrete posts last longer?

Concrete posts and gravel boards don’t rot, so they are a good choice on exposed or damp sites. Our highway-spec timber posts are a good choice where you want an all-timber look. We fit both and will recommend what suits your garden.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes. All our work is guaranteed. It’s carried out by our own tradesmen to British Standard installation.
